About Us

Sunflower Feather Man

Laikipia County, Kenya supports a remarkable, robust population that consists mainly of Maasai and Samburu communities. Their cultural traditions go back more than a thousand years. Today, development and growth from nearby urban communities have added burdens to health care and education.  The Loisaba Community Conservation Foundation provides support to families in and around Ewaso Village with support for water management, community health, food security, empowerment of women and girls, and public education.

During the 20 year history of the Loisaba Community Conservation Foundation, our board and volunteers have contributed extensively to the education and development of the greater Ewaso community.

Highlights of our efforts include:

  • Support for Community Health Clinic – building a maternity wing, funding a nurse, providing emergency medications and supplies, installing solar power, maintenance and repairs
  • Instituting a Community Health Workers Program
  • Student Scholarships for Secondary & University Education
  • Primary School Food Program – daily breakfast and lunch
  • Improvements for Primary School Facilities – Creating a Computer Lab, building classrooms and Teacher & Student Housing, building a cafeteria where 300-400 children are fed daily, installing Solar Power, security fencing
  • Programs for The Empowerment Of Women & Girls – educational and self-determination programs, skills training, enhancing employment opportunities
  • Emergency Food Relief During Drought & Pandemic
  • Animal Conservation Programs
  • Well Building & Water Storage Tanks for the school, clinic and community

Ewaso Village – by Chip Duncan

The Maasai people of East Africa comprise one of the most intriguing and resourceful cultures on Earth. For more than a thousand years, the Maasai and their Samburu neighbors have survived and thrived as pastoralists on the savannah near Mt. Kenya and the Maasai Mara borderlands of Kenya and Tanzania. Photojournalist Chip Duncan exuberantly combines prose, poetry, and beautiful photographs to celebrate the stories, songs, rituals, and dreams of people who live in Ewaso Village, one of his favorite places to visit.

About the Author

A lifelong Midwesterner and native of western Iowa, Chip Duncan has produced more than fifty non-fiction films for international broadcast and distribution. His work as a photographer and filmmaker has taken him to ice fields, war zones, slums, shipyards, museums, palaces, vineyards, beaches, deserts, rainforests, savannahs, and farmlands. He counts Peru, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, and rural Kenya among his favorite places. Duncan’s previous books include the short story collection Half A Reason To Die (Select Books, NYC, 2017), photographic collections Inspiring Change (Thunder House Press, Milwaukee, 2019) and Enough To Go Around (Select Books, NYC, 2009). Duncan also speaks publicly on the impact of climate change as part of The Three Tenors of Climate Change. Ewaso Village is Duncan’s first book of poetry, and the first in a trilogy featuring indigenous cultures from around the world.
